?Android Software Enhancement
Chapter four. Underneath the Covers: Startup Code and Resources while in the MJAndroid Software
Chapter 3 introduced the major software we use within this book to illustrate standard Android concepts. That chapter explained which data files make up the source code, even so it didn’t actually cover any source code inside the software. We’ll launch trying at source code in this particular chapter. And to help you to definitely get started developing an software very fast, we’ll begin with the initial task every standalone software has to perform: initialization.
The events covered on this chapter occur involving your selecting “Run As Android Application” from the Eclipse menu and seeing the map that MJAndroid displays at startup. This chapter shows how Android makes it very simple to develop relatively complex purposes. In just 80 lines of code and some associated XML resource information, MJAndroid manages to:
Display an interactive map
Track the present location with the Android phone and update the map
Form a local databases of related information and load consumer preferences into it
Give a dynamically changing menu
Display consumer interface things these kinds of as labels, buttons, and spinners
Run a new Activity to display a supporting screen
The Java code in an Android software interacts tightly with XML resource information, so we’ll bounce back again and forth concerning them in such a chapter. As we point out repeatedly, XML data files are easier to tweak during enhancement and sustain over the life of an software. The pattern of Android encourages you to definitely specify the glimpse and behavior belonging to the software inside the resource data files.
Initialization Parameters in AndroidManifest.xml
As Chapter 3 explained, we told Android to launch Microjobs.java because the to start with Activity for MJAndroid. We defined that relating to the Software tab in the AndroidManifest.xml editor. The primary part with the XML code that good results from that choice is demonstrated below:
This section in the chapter focuses relating to the XML in this particular file. The MicroJobs Activity is identified from the manifest on the beginning with the file. This part with the file is normally created in Eclipse if you happen to 1st build the Challenge that you just use to write down your software .
Like all wonderful XML data files, line 1 has the standard declaration of your XML version as well as character encoding utilized. Before we get into the Activities that make up the MJAndroid software, we define a handful of parameters and declare needed permissions for your whole software:
This is just the package name we gave when we created the software in Eclipse. It is also the default package for all the modules with the software.
This is surely an integer that should always increment with each individual new version on the software. Every software should include a version code, and it should always be a monotonically increasing integer from version to version. This allows other programs (this kind of as Android Market, installers, and launchers) easily figure out which is the latest version of an software. The filename of your .apk file should include this same version range, so it is obvious which version it possesses.
This version identifier can be a string, and it is intended to be increased like the version figures you usually see for programs. The naming convention is up to you, but generally the idea is to make use of a scheme like m.n.o (for as a great deal of figures as you need to use), to identify successive amounts of change to the software. The idea is usually that this is the version identifier that would be displayed to the consumer (either by your software or another software).
There are four of these in MJAndroid, and they declare that the software intends make use of qualities of Android that require explicit permission from the consumer belonging to the cell unit working the software. The permission is requested once the software is installed, and from then on Android remembers that the person mentioned it was OK (or not) to run this software and accessibility the secure functionality. There are a lot of permissions by now defined in Android, all described inside the Android documentation (search for android.Manifest.permission ). It's possible to also define your very own permissions and use them to restrict other applications’ accessibility to functions inside your software, unless the person grants another software that permission. The permissions requested in this article are:
ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION. which is required to obtain location knowledge from the GPS sensor.
ACCESS_LOCATION_EXTRA_COMMANDS. The Android documentation doesn’t tell us which location commands are “extra,” so we’ll ask for all of these.
CALL_PHONE. This permits MJAndroid to request that the Dialer put a cellular phone call on its behalf.
ACCESS_MOCK_LOCATION. so we can get fake location info when we’re jogging beneath the emulator.
INTERNET. so we can retrieve map tiles over an Internet link.
This is the filename for a PNG file that accommodates the icon you’d like to try on your software. During this case we’re telling the Android SDK to search for your icon file inside of the drawable subdirectory on the res (resources) directory beneath MJAndroid. Android will use this icon for your personal software inside Android Desktop.
Turning our attention to the definition for your earliest (and main) Activity, MicroJobs, we to start with define just a few attributes for that Activity:
The name on the Activity. The total name on the Activity consists of the package name (which in our software is “com.microjobsinc.mjandroid.MicroJobs”), but since this file is always put to use on the package’s namespace, we do not will need to include the leading package names. The Android SDK strips the package name down to “.MicroJobs” when it creates this part of AndroidManifest.xml . and even the leading period is optional.
The label that we desire to appear on the top within the Android screen in the event the Activity is around the screen. We saw this before in HelloWorld, where we changed the string in strings.xml to match our software.
We then declare an intent filter that tells Android when this Activity should be run. We talked briefly about Intents in Chapter 1. and now we see them in use. As you’ll recall, when Android encounters an Intent to fulfill, it looks among the on the market Activities and Companies to get something that can company the Intent. We established two attributes:
Right now Android is trying to launch this software, so it is exploring for an Activity that declares itself willing to resolve the MAIN action. Any software that is certainly going to be launched by the Launcher needs to have exactly a particular Activity or Provider that makes this assertion.
The Intent resolver in Android takes advantage of this attribute to further qualify the Intent that it is searching for. With this case, the qualification is the fact that we’d like for this Activity to be displayed on the Person Menu so the person can select it to begin this software. Specifying the LAUNCHER category accomplishes this. You can easily have a perfectly valid software without this attribute-you just won’t be able to launch it from the Android consumer interface. Normally, again, you’ll have exactly a single LAUNCHER for each software, and it will appear during the same intent filter since the opening Activity of your software.

?What’s so wrong with sex before marriage?
Is God the pouncing ogre when He says that sex is strictly for marriage, or is He the loving, caring father, who knows that lovemaking is only satisfying if the lovers have a commitment of marriage?
The Bible is just not the "prudish" book that popular opinion says it is. In Genesis, right within the beginning of our species, God instructs Adam to "know" (i.e. have intercourse with) his wife, Eve. Human sexuality is dealt with as an issue that is certainly very very much a part of our make-up. The "love poem" that is definitely the Song of Solomon comprises some very descriptive passages relating to lovers enjoying every others bodies. There are also some passages that relate the successes of "inappropriate" sexual contact. There are effective prohibitions against incest, rape, homosexuality and any variety of sexual molestation. The Judaeo-Christian "cultural" prohibitions have grown out of these commandments, and centuries of observation from the successes of sexual behaviour.
• Females who have slept with three or considerably more people over a lifetime are 15 times a great deal more most likely to get cervical cancer.
• Couples who have sex before marriage are extra very likely to get divorced. According to the study by the National Survey of Family Growth, ( USA ) women who have premarital sex increase their odds of divorce by about sixty percent. This fact alone gives you secular evidence for St. Paul ’s injunction, "flee fornication."
• The a whole lot more promiscuous you may be before marriage, the significantly more possible you may be to commit adultery AFTER marriage.
• Any time you live together before marriage, you will be considerably more unlikely to marry that person. Columbia University found that "only 26 percent of women surveyed in addition to a scant 19 percent of men" married the person they were being living with. Another study showed that even if they do marry, couples who begin their marriages through cohabitation are almost twice as possible to divorce in just ten years compared to all initial marriages: 57 percent to 80 percent.
• Found that 'perfect person'? Don't be fooled! People who have sex before marriage run a risk of marrying someone who just isn't right for them. Sexual intimacy could in fact be emotionally blinding and it makes couples believe closer than they really are. 1 counsellor put it perfectly by saying, "Real love can stand the examination of time without physical intimacy." The sexually active lose objectivity."
• That who try it outside the house of marriage often suffer guilt and fear due to the dangers of STDs or unwanted pregnancy. Feelings of guilt can lead to frigidity and impotence."
• Perhaps not so remarkably, it is those who stay pure and marry who enjoy sex most: The Family Research Council surveyed 1,100 people about their sexual satisfaction. Within a Washington Post op-ed, FRC’s William Mattox, Jr. took a take a look on the inspiring outcome. It was "found that 72 percent of all married ‘traditionalists (those who believe that sex outside the house of marriage is wrong) report big sexual satisfaction. This is," Mattox explained, "roughly 31 percentage points higher than the degree registered by unmarried ‘non-traditionalists’ (people who have no or only some objection to sex outside the house of marriage) and 13 percentage points higher than that registered by married non-traditionalists."

Most Sexually Skilled Teens Want They Had Waited. The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy a short while ago surveyed a nationally representative sample of 501 teens ages 12 to 17 and found that 41 percent of these had had sexual intercourse. Among those who have been sexually veteran, 63 percent belonging to the total and 72 percent of your girls reported wishing they had waited longer before becoming sexually active.
Other important findings with the survey included. 1.) Teens rated their parents since the most influential factor in their decisions about sex. two.) 78 percent of all teens surveyed believed that teenagers should not be sexually active. 3.) 89 percent of those surveyed would advise their very own brother, sister, or friend not to have sex until at least after finishing huge school.
In 1997, 73.0% of births to married women were being healthy, compared with 53.5% of births to one women.
In 1997, 70.6% of births to women with at least a significant school education had been healthy, compared with 51.2% of births to women with less than a higher school education.
Mothers less than 15 years of age keep going to be essentially the most probably to have a lower birth-weight baby; risk of very low birth-weight is lowest among births to women 25-29 years of age.
Very low birth-weight infants as a percentage of all infants born inside of the United States, by age of mother (1998). Less than Age 15 13.1% Ages 15 - 19 9.5% Ages 20 - 24 7.5% Ages twenty five - 29 6.7% Ages 30 - 34 7.0% Ages 35 - 49 8.7%

Sample Evaluative Essay
Task: Evaluate X’s argument in What’s so wrong with sex before marriage?
X, in his article, sets out to convince his readers that they shouldn’t have sex before marriage. Undoubtedly his intended audience is teenagers and he seeks to convince them by presenting a bunch of separate, unconnected premises in assist of his common contention. Surely, none of these premises on their own unique is solid enough to prevent a teenager from having sex before marriage however it is understandable how some teenagers may be greatly affected if they are presented with this whole selection of reasons all at once. The argument would be a lot stronger if all the premises ended up linked and had been all nicely supported. Contingent upon a teenager’s background and encounter he/she will track down certain parts of your argument added or less convincing. For example X begins his argument by seeking to existing the Bible as a ‘cool’ textual content and an authority on sexual matters. If I am anti-religion, or simply of the different religion than Christianity, then I will obviously not identify this aspect of his argument convincing. After discussing the authority with the Bible, X moves on to the presentation of what he calls ‘a number of facts’. Whether or not, what X presents as ‘facts’ are indeed facts is the number one question we should ask and even if they are accepted as facts, a single however needs to go on to consider the significance of these facts.
X’s very first choice of fact is somewhat worrying. Instead of trying to convince us logically, through reason, he jumps in with scare tactics. In the event you are a woman and you have sex before marriage you happen to be 15 times greater in all likelihood to get cervical cancer. So, what X appears to be to be saying is ‘when you like to avoid cervical cancer, then avoid sex before marriage’. This is similar to the tactic of showing videos of actual bloody abortions to teenage girls, utilized so often by the anti-abortion lobby. Trying to get someone to adopt your point of perspective, through fear, will not be a sound way of arguing your case.
X’s next fact suggests that if you happen to have sex before marriage then you have a greater chance of acquiring divorced. To me, all this suggests is always that those who did not have sex before marriage did not do so due to the fact they believed strongly with the ‘sanctity’ of marriage. Those same people, in the event the marriage goes wrong, are equally reluctant to get divorced for exactly the same reason. Marriage is sacred and regardless if it can be an unhappy an individual, it must be endured when you consider that ‘what God has joined together no man must separate’. Those who have sex before marriage are relaxed about sex, realistic about relationships and are prepared to admit defeat and try again elsewhere. What X should be seeking to establish is the degree of happiness inside of a marriage amongst those who had sex before the marriage and those that hadn’t. What he would discover tends to be that there are a wide range of unhappy people in marriages on the grounds that they are afraid to get divorced – and what he would probably further get a hold of tends to be that the people who are afraid to get divorced are the people who have been afraid to have sex before marriage.
X goes on to claim that ‘in the event you live together before marriage, you could be increased unlikely to marry that person’. He obviously wants to current this as evidence as to why you should not have sex outside the house marriage. However, if what he statements is true, then I would say that it leads to the opposite summary: you should have sex before marriage - it’s a way of tests whether the marriage would operate. If your ‘hormones’ are pushing you into having sex and you marry someone just so you can legitimately have sex and thereby calm your raging hormones, then surely your marriage is influenced by very insecure foundations. However, for those who have been having sex regularly with someone and you nonetheless decide to marry them, you happen to be doing so for noticeably sounder reasons. Surely it is greater to have sex with someone and not marry them than to marry them, have sex for your to begin with thirty day period, become unhappy and stay with them with the rest of your life just basically because you think marriage and sex is sacred?
Previously mentioned, I have only focused on three with the ‘facts’ that X delivers in aid of his claim that sex before marriage is wrong. He has quite a few other ‘facts’ unconnected with every single other which contain as some, if not extra flaws, than those just dealt with over. Overall, X’s argument against sex before marriage is unconvincing merely because within the disconnectedness for the premises plus the questionable interpretations of his ‘facts’. Indeed the facts themselves are questionable. X has failed to convince me that sex before marriage is wrong and any teenager that may scan his article, even though considering having sex, would undoubtedly act according to his have wishes rather than follow any advise given by X.
